A simple way to generate and convert more leads is by having overwhelming proof that your BJJ gym is amazing.
You show this by plastering testimonials all over your website, social media, and paid ads.
Many gym owners I speak with talk about the incredible culture and community inside their gym, but the problem is, outsiders aren’t exposed to that culture.
Let’s pretend you are a new prospect unfamiliar with jiu-jitsu and you find 2 local gyms you’re interested in.
The first gym has a very nice website, with a modern, trendy look but zero reviews.
The second has a clean website with dozens of amazing video reviews, showcasing life-changing experiences of people just like you.
Which would go with?
Investing time in getting better video reviews is a smart use of your time as a BJJ gym owner.
How To Get Better Testimonials
The main issues is that gym owners don’t know how to get quality reviews, don’t have a system in place to make it easy, or, simply just don’t ask for them.
Here’s a better way.
Yes, you need Google and Yelp reviews, which I’ll explain how to automate next, but nothing will influence a new lead like a video testimonial.
To get impactful video testimonials, do this.
After a student has achieved some level of success in your gym - won a competition, earned a new belt level, lost 20 pounds, ask them to “share their story.”
Don’t ask for a “testimonial” because people shy away from that term.
Instead, tell them how inspiring their story is and how you think it could help motivate other people too.
Then, use these questions for the perfect video testimonial.
“Before you started jiu-jitsu, what was the worst moment that made you realize you needed to make a change?”
“What was life like after training jiu-jitsu and joining (your gym)?”
That’s it. And ask them to keep it under 2 minutes.
By starting with the lowest point it will hook viewers to keep watching. Then, the transformation reveals the power of BJJ to change lives.
This kind of testimonial will be must more impactful then “oh yeah, I love the community here, the instructors are great, and I get a great workout every class.”
How To Get Testimonials On Autopilot
Although I recommend asking for these kinds of video reviews in person, you can also ask for them on autopilot with email automations.
When you ask in person, the student will feel much more inclined to share their story. How many review emails have you deleted after making a purchase? Probably most of them.
Plus, when you’re in person you can take advantage of the right moment, as mentioned above, after some kind of success, even offering your own phone for them to shoot the video.
I recommend using email automations for Google and Yelp reviews at 3 months after a new member has joined.
You can also set up automations after belt promotions or major competitions.
Where To Post Your Testimonials

Testimonials are gold for your gym. Post them everywhere you can.
Most importantly, add them all over your website.
You want them on the homepage and any landing page for leads, like a form submission page.
The truth is, you can put them on every single page of your website. You can even create an entire “Testimonials” page with every review you’ve ever received.
Next, use them in your paid advertising. Cut them down into 60s or less and use them in ads. Mash them together with a few seconds from each to showcase different personas and stories.
Run female testimonials to women only, kids class reviews to parents only audiences, and so on. Match the review to the target audience.
Finally, feel free to post them to your organic social media, as new prospects will likely browse your feed.
Don’t feel shy showcasing the amazing results your business is producing.
Final Thoughts
You can never have enough social proof for your business. There’s a reason why Amazon puts an emphasis on reviews…people trust and buy when other people do too.
Make getting testimonials part of your regular routine.
Try to get one a week.
With that simple process you’d have 52 high-quality video reviews by the end of the year.
Remember, jiu-jitsu doesn’t just change lives, it saves them.
Give people an opportunity to share their story and you’ll be blown away by the impact may have you’ve had on people’s lives.
Skyrocket your gym’s success simply by showing the amazing impact you’ve had.
